I think that if advertising dollars were added to player pools the game would become much more popular. However, what is “good for the game” and what is good for industry operators may not always be exactly the same thing. I think it is difficult for them to sacrifice profits today in the hope of a better bottom line in the future.

The first point touched by Daniel is quite important actually. Mybe if the poker industry somehow found a way to inject more money in the tourneys the game could get another big boo. Maybe something like that for the cash games were the rake would be lowered or even remuved and the operators would gain from advertisement.
