Paul Ratchford Bio

About Paul “Vulcans” Ratchford:

USOpen & ThePokerCapitalist

I first started playing mid-stakes poker on the Cryptologic network back in 2006-2007. After working a brief stint on Wall Street during the financial crisis I quit to pursue other interests including poker. Since then I have been consistently playing in mid/high stakes No Limit Holdem games online. The games have gotten significantly higher but so far 2013 has been my best year ever in terms of win-rate. I strive to play a creative style and am highly perceptive of leaks in my opponents games. Since 2011, I have been an instructor at DragtheBar.com, a leading poker instructional website.

In 2013 I started working on Exploitive No Limit Holdem, which fits with my overall approach to poker. The key to long term success in this game is constantly working to create positive EV (Expected Value). While I do not instruct individual students I enjoy the process of teaching and sharing my experiences in the game. Effectively conveying complex poker theory to readers in a succinct manner is incredibly challenging. When I first started out I scoffed at the idea of it taking a year to complete. However, one year and a couple of drafts later I understand the incredible amount of work that goes into writing a book. There were times when I was too busy or simply wasn’t inspired to write and that contributed to the length of time it took. The 3 weeks leading up to its completion were very exausting and sending the book off to be formatted was an incredible relief! I hope that my readers enjoy the book and deepen their understanding of No Limit Holdem from reading it.

I completed the book on January 11th, 2014 and it will be published by the end of Jan.

I currently live in Vancouver, BC (greatest city in the world :)) with my wife, the amazing FishyFish12, and my dog Juno.

I first started playing poker in 2008 and i’ve been hooked ever since. I can’t claim to have as an impressive résumé as Paul… i’m as Joe average as you can get. I’ve come from a background in trucking to trying to make a living in this crazy game we love. Indeed if I can do it anyone can. I was so determined to succeed in the early days I used to regularly fire up NL10 tables on a laptop in my truck in order to get my daily fix lol.

These days i’m lucky enough to have my own office where I play 6-7 tables upto NL200 on various networks.

My focus is quality over quantity as I feel i’m still able to effectively learn that way, such is my desire to further progress up the poker stakes. Working closely with Paul has taken my game to another level, so much so, Paul has encouraged me to write a book for our ‘Poker reference’ book section. Stay tuned for that one, working title: GTO for dummies

I live in Manchester UK, with my ever suffering Wife-to-be Diane and our two beautiful daughters.
